Frequently Asked Questions about Septic/Well Ordinance (2095) Requirements
May I install my own riser?
Yes. Make sure to follow the Installation instructions that come with the riser kit. If you aren't using a kit, be sure all the technical requirements are met. Bulletin 4-2 requires all below grade attachments to the tank, connections, riser, extensions and lid to be watertight. Any opening larger than 8 inches that extends to the surface shall be child and tamper resistant. Ways to accomplish this include lids weighing at least 65 pounds, locks, or anchors that are not removable without special tools.
What if I don’t know where my septic tank and field lines are located?
First, make an honest effort to locate the system. The paperwork when you purchased the cabin may have the location. Ask neighbors if they know the location. Often, it is possible to see a difference in the vegetation and level of the ground where the systems are located.
If you simply can’t find the system, just standby. The city inspector and/or a volunteer will work with you as ordinance compliance nears overall completion.
My septic tank and field lines are between the House and Lake, may I use flush markers?
There are two purposes for marking the septic systems: to provide ready reference to where the system is located; and more importantly to protect the system. Systems that are susceptible to vehicle traffic need to be protected by visible markers.
What is acceptable as a barrier to protect my well?
Each system will be different. The purpose is not only to protect your well from damage, but also, to protect the ground water from contamination through a damaged well. We need to meet the intended purpose of protecting the well head to effectively protect the ground water.
