PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS

Its summer season again at the City Lake and many of us are enjoying our favorite water sports. I would like to take this moment to remind all lake users that safety should be our first priority. Last weekend, like many of you, I enjoyed cruising our beautiful lake and it reminded me of the importance of all of us being well aware of all activities that occur at our lake. One of the greatest advantages of the City Lake is that it is a multiple use recreational lake. This however is also a stronger reason to use constant vigilance and common sense in our boating practices. During the summer months it is not unusual to find fisherman, boat cruisers, skiers, sailors, jet skis, and paddle boats all sharing the same lake concurrently. Therefore, this is a reminder for boat captains to stay focused and not be distracted from important safety procedures and good boating practices. For a complete listing of the City Lake Rules and Regulations regarding boat safety please see our website at www.cgclakeassoc.org. Please share this information with friends, family and visitors who also enjoy the Council Grove City Lake.

LAKE ASSOCIATION DONATES $1,000 TO EDUCATION FUND

As most of you know, the Lake Association has an ongoing program to provide assistance to the USD 417 Educational Enhancement Fund. This includes “selling” Council Grove City Lake license plates for a donation of ten dollars. ALL of this money goes to the educational fund thanks to Leon Lungwitz, D37, who manufactured and donated the plates.

Recently the Lake Association presented a $1,000 check to the USD 417 Educational Enhancement fund.

If you haven’t donated to the fund, we encourage you to do so and proudly display the license plate.

The license plates are available at ACE Hardware, Adams Lumber, and Trudy’s Trowbridge Classics Please take time to visit one of these local merchants, pick up a license plate and thank them for supporting our local school district, teachers and students.

We are extremely excited to be able to contribute to the students and teachers of the school district in this manner. Keep the money coming!!! Promote the Council Grove City Lake while at the same time giving to the local community. Thank you so much for your support. Together, we can!

COUNCIL GROVE PRIDE COMMITTEE

Diane Bolton and Cheerie Baker, both Council Grove City Lake residents, are helping ready Main Street for summer activities and the influx of tourists and lake visitors. They also were largely responsible for organizing and coordinating the fall and spring Council Grove clean-up campaign, working through the Council Grove Pride Committee, of which Cheerie is the chairperson, and coordinating those efforts with the City and County governments.

Please take time to thank Cheerie and Diane. We are proud to have them as members of the lake community. If you would like to join in their efforts, feel free to contact them. They can always use more help in building pride in the community.

Members of the Pride Committee, volunteers from Rotary and Council Grove City Lake Association worked together to place hanging baskets of flowers, repot street planters and place new stone planters along Main Street. Huge thanks go to lake residents Cheerie Baker and Diane Bolton for organizing this tremendous effort. Special accolades go to lake resident Eric Nelson, owner of Neosho Gardens, for donating all the plants and flowers, the forklift, and his time and skills operating the forklift to place the stone planters. Please be sure to tell these folks how much we appreciate them the next time you see them.

LAKE SHIRTS AVAILABLE AT TRUDY’S TROWBRIDGE CLASSICS

The popular “ Lake Shirt” tee shirts are now available at Trudy’s Trowbridge Classics, located at 113 W Main Street. City Lake resident Jack Bales, owner and operator of Trudy’s, has agreed to stock this popular shirt. Jack also has the City Lake license plates and will gladly accept your donation to the local Education Enhancement Fund. Stop in and see Jack and be sure to thank him for his support.

INDEPENDENCE DAY REGATTA

The annual Independence Day Regatta and lake front decoration will be Saturday July 5 th. Details are available on the web site. Now is the time to start planning and purchasing your boat and water front decorations. Christie Brungardt has agreed to chair this committee again this year. If you would like to assist her, please give her a call. This is an event which requires people to organize and judge so she will need several volunteers.

BIOLOGICAL SURVEY AT CITY LAKE

Thursday, May eighth, a team from Kansas University conducted a Biological survey of the Council Grove City Lake. A team composed of Dr. Mark Jakubauskas, Dr. Jerry de Noyelles, and Aquatic Specialist Scott Campbell, performed a Bathymetric survey to map lake depth and sediment accumulation on the Council Grove City Lake. City Lake resident John Nicodemus hosted the team and accompanied them during parts of the survey. Current plans are for the team to make a presentation of their findings at a Lake Association meeting later this summer. The public will be invited to the presentation.

Funded by the Kansas Water Office, the Kansas Biological Survey's ASTRA (Applied Science and
Technology for Reservoir Assessment) team employs state-of-the-art bathymetric mapping sonar that creates 3-D color-coded depth maps of reservoirs and highly detailed maps of lake bottom contours and sediment thickness.  Maps resulting from the survey will be of interest to boaters, fishermen, and lake managers.  The bathymetric survey will also result in the creation of tables that show the capacity of the lake.

Recognizing the critical need for information on Kansas reservoir conditions, the Kansas Biological Survey in 2006 created the Applied Science and Technology for Reservoir Assessment (ASTRA) Initiative, with major investments in infrastructure and equipment to address the need. The Survey is a source of biological and ecological information about the Kansas environment and has extensive experience in reservoir, stream, and water quality assessment, watershed monitoring, and remote sensing and
related geospatial technologies. KBS is uniquely qualified to contribute to the research and information needs for immediate and longer-term management of Kansas reservoirs.

More information about the survey is available at their web site www.kars.ku.edu/astrarrent

WATER SAFETY

DO'S AND DON'TS OF BOATING SAFETY

The following tips from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks can help ensure a safe boating season for all:

· Wear a life jacket;

· Know the water and environment you will be boating on;

· Keep a good lookout while underway;

· Shut your engines off when people are in the water near your boat;

· Observe the nautical "rules of the road";

· Keep a balanced load and trim a boat;

· Don't overload your boat;

· Don't stand up in small boats;

· Don't ride on the gunwale, bow, seat backs, or any place that is not designed for sitting; and

· Don't drink and boat.

These reminders all carry a consistent theme -- use common sense when on the water. If you feel something is dangerous, it probably is. These tips will help you chart a safe course toward safe, enjoyable boating. Remember: Boat Smart From the Start. Wear your life jacket.

We encourage everyone to read the State Boating Regulations on the KDWP web site. There is a link to KDWP on the Lake Association web site www.cgclakeassoc.org. The City of Council Grove Lake rules and regulations are available at City Hall and also on the Lake Association web site. Please be aware, city rules differ from some of the state regulations. It is a good idea to print these rules and regulations and make sure you and your guests are aware of them. You are responsible for informing your guest.

Some current local safety concerns based on inputs (complaints) from lake users include :

  • Continuing to boat with lightning in the area, boats are good lightning attractors. If you can hear thunder, you probably shouldn’t be on the lake.
  • Boating too close to docks. Remember, children often swim around docks, be courteous give docks a wide berth.
  • Boating too fast in the no wake areas, especially around docks. A reminder: City Ordinance 1991 defines an impermissible wake as any wake with a white cap.

KDWP SECRETARY HAYDEN VISITS LAKE

Mike Hayden, Secretary of Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks enjoyed the day Saturday, May 17 th, crappie fishing on our beautiful City Lake with lake residents Andy Hutter and Charlie Bush. This provided an excellent opportunity for the Secretary to become better acquainted with our lake and community. Andy and Joyce Hutter hosted the former governor.
