Membership dues are coming in at a record rate. In the first three weeks since the cards were mailed, 226 have paid their 2007 dues. More details about dues and membership may be found in the February news letter, available on our web site: cgclakeassoc.org

For those who have misplaced their card, a membership card is printed on the last page of this newsletter. The form and dues should be mailed to Council Grove City Lake Association,

Financial Stability and Governance Issue Update

T he mayor’s special commission recently approved a compromise plan, after rejecting the city’s plan for annexation and the Lake Association’s proposal for purchasing the residential lots. The compromise plan for which were cast seven votes in favor, zero votes against, and one abstention, calls for lake homeowners to reimburse the city one half of the survey costs to plat every lot at the lake. In return, the city would grant a permanent easement for each homeowner. Lake representatives to the special commission asked Lake Association members for authorization to move forward with this new compromise plan. All in attendance at the March meeting (approximately 85) voted in favor of this new plan. Last week the special commission submitted their work which includes this compromise plan to the city council. The city council asked the city attorney to look at the proposal. Further plans to be dealt with at a later time include the development of a homeowners association and an operating agreement for the homeowners association to govern the lake. The leadership of the lake association will keep you updated on these issues as they progress.

New Treasurer

Our treasure, Carolyn Nelson, has accepted a position at Emporia State University, and because of time constraints due to her new endeavor, thought it in the best interest of the Lake Association, to resign and hand the treasurer’s position over to someone with more time. Carolyn has done a terrific job of implementing an excel bookkeeping system, for more complete and open records. Please take time to thank Carolyn for a job well done.

The Executive Board appointed LuAnn Fuller to finish Carolyn’s term. LuAnn has graciously accepted the position at the busiest time of the year, with the collection of annual dues and the Business Directory renewals happening at the same time. When you see LuAnn remember to thank her for her work.

Lake Association Election

Election of Lake Association officers will be at the June meeting. All of the current officers’ terms expire at the end of June. The positions open for election will be Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer, and Secretary. To effectively support the Lake Association, these officers need daily access to a computer, basic email and computer skills, able to devote several hours a week to planning, writing and/or meetings, with occasional travel to Manhattan or Topeka. We are in need of new people, and ideas to keep the association vitalized and moving in a positive direction.

If you are interested in serving as a Lake Association officer, please email your pertinent information and interest to cglakeassoc@yahoo.com . If serving on the executive board seems to be a bit too much, the Association also needs its members to step up with new ideas, or revitalized old ideas and take the lead in implementing them. Email us if you have a project you’re interested in leading or supporting.

Lawn Care Management (Chemical Class)

A record Seventy- four people attended the city mandated lawn care management class. Thanks to Sylvia Murphy for an excellent job of organizing, taking care of the certificates and fees for the city. Loy James, Morris County extension agent, again managed to make mundane material interesting. Remember, a certificate of completion is a requirement to use herbicides, pesticides, fertilizer; etc at the lake. The certificate is valid for two years from the class completion date. More details are available in the city ordinance section at the Lake Association web site http://www.cgclakeassoc.org/

New Caretaker

The city has hired as the new caretaker, Calvin Seadeek. Calvin is currently a Morris County Deputy Sheriff. He will not start full time employment immediately. In the future we will have more information to introduce Calvin. In the meantime if you run into Calvin, please welcome him to the lake.

Lake Stories

Phil Tauton, E-19, writes for the Emporia Gazette and is interested in Lake stories. His correspondence is retyped here. Phil also sent a great story about Carp at the lake. It would be nice to find a good way to share items like this. Maybe a section on the web site for such stories would be fun. Get in contact with Phil if you have stories or recipes you’d like to share    Hello, my name is Phil Taunton and I have been on or around Council Grove City Lake since the early Sixties.  I write a weekly outdoors column for the Emporia Gazette and I am most interested in your favorite lake stories.  My phone number is 1-620-342-5016 or you can e-mail me ptaunton@cableone.net if you have a story or outdoor recipe you would like to share.  Best regards, Phil Taunton.

Kaw Mission Activities

A new link to the Kaw Mission web site has been added to our lake Association home page. Scheduled activities at the mission are also included in the “Things to do in Council Grove” section of the web site. The mission programs are very interesting and worthwhile.

Join the Digital Age

The executive board has strived to use the Internet and email to increase awareness of current news and disseminate more information to the membership. Many documents, that were previously available only at city hall, are now available on the Lake Association web site cgclakeassoc.org. The Association email list disseminates current information directly to over 169 email addresses and reaches many non- email members through neighbors and friends. If you wish to receive email updates concerning current lake news, send your email address to mailto:cglakeassoc@ yahoo.com
