Newsletter April 2008 CONTACTSEmail cglakeassoc@yahoo.com Web Site: cgclakeassoc.org PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS Consistent with our Master Plan and our established goals for 2007-2008 the Lake Association is expanding its activities to include fundraising efforts for our local schools. We believe a strong organization is multi-faceted where we address issues of self-concern, while at the same time serving the community around us. In that spirit, I am happy to announce our 2008 fundraising activities for the USD 417 school district. Our efforts include two programs. First, we are selling Council Grove City Lake license plates. Thanks to a gift from Lake Homeowner Leon Lunquist, we are able to provide 100% of the proceeds from the license plate sales to the Educational Fund of the Community Foundation of Council Grove. Each license plate retails for $10 and are sold at our Lake Association general meetings. Second, the Lake Association has paid for the development of fundraising brochures for the Educational Fund of the Community Foundation. We hope that this material will encourage additional gifts to our local schools. I strongly encourage you to buy one of our license plates and show pride in the lake community while at the same time supporting our schools. UPDATE ON FINANCIAL STABILITY AND GOVERNANCE ISSUES The Lake Association leadership is encouraged by the recent support we have received from several business leaders in Council Grove. Linda Wessel (President of the local Chamber of Commerce) and Tim Tyner (Council Grove businessman) have expressed their support for the Lake Association’s efforts to negotiate an equitable agreement with the City in 2008. These business leaders as well as others have confirmed the important role lake residents play in the social and economic activities of Morris County. We applaud and support their efforts to renew negotiations between the Lake Association and the City on these important issues. NEW ADDITION TO OUR LEGAL TEAM This month the law firm of Stinson, Morrison, Hecker have joined the Lake Association legal team. Stinson, Morrison, Hecker is one of the largest firms in America and has a strong national and international reputation. Their real estate litigation department will be assisting and providing advice to our attorney Bill Frost and the Lake Association Board of Directors on important legal issues. RESPONSE TO THE MAYOR’S LETTER Please see attached to this newsletter, letters from Curt Brungardt, President of the Lake Association, and Dave Fritchen, Executive Committee member. These letters are in response to the letter dated March 25, 2008 from Council Grove Mayor Cynthia Engle. Both Curt and Dave served on the latest Special Commission and worked closely with city officials during the recent negotiations. THANK YOU FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT The officers and the executive committee of the Lake Association would like to thank all those members who sent notes, letters, emails, and phone calls of support and encouragement over the last month. Your remarks have been an inspiration to us as we proceed through these difficult times. We know it is not possible for everyone to devote their time to advancing our causes (especially if you live far away or are employed full-time). However, it is most gratifying to know we have your support. Please keep the feedback coming. We need to hear from you. BOARD OF DIRECTOR POSITIONS AVAILABLE This June, the Lake Association membership will elect eleven new board members under our new corporate by-laws. If you are interested in serving on the Board of Directors of the Lake Association, please fill out the candidacy form located on the Lake Association website. Deadline for candidacy forms to be completed and mailed or emailed is May 10. BOARD OF DIRECTOR ELECTIONS In late May for the Board of Director ballots will be mailed to all Lake Association members in good standing. Ballots will need to be returned to the Lake Association address or hand delivered at our June membership meeting. Further instructions about this process will be sent to the members with their ballot. To be a member in good standing, membership dues must be received by midnight May 25, 2008. BUSINESS DIRECTORY The Business Directory for the 2008 season is attached to this newsletter. This Directory will be published and mailed four times during the calendar year. A copy will also be sent to each new lake resident in the “welcome packet”. A current copy is also available on our web site www.cgclakeassoc.org. Please save this directory as a reference and patronize these services. Also, the bottom of our web site homepage now has direct links to our premier sponsors’ web sites. We provide the Business Directory as a service to both lake homeowners and the local community. This years’ directory is the result of considerable volunteer work and a desire to help the communities, by LuAnn Fuller. Please take time to thank her for the fine work. SPRING LAKE CLEAN-UP The Spring Lake Clean up was a huge success, and came at an appropriate time as the debris from the winter ice storm was quite large. The city crews hauled off over sixty dump truck loads of brush and other debris. We complement the city for their efforts and cooperation with the Council Grove Pride Committee. We also express our appreciation to Lake Residents Cheerie Baker and Diane Bolton for their leadership and work with the Pride Committee to coordinate with the city and make these clean-up efforts possible. Thanks, ladies!! SHIRTS, BAGS, APRONS AND OTHER ITEMS This year we are going to be ordering T-shirts to sell. Hopefully we will have a sample at the May Association meeting. We will be taking orders at that meeting. These will be a great item to have for all your kids and grandkids when they are here. Plan ahead!!! Get their sizes and order on May 10 th!!! COUNCIL GROVE CITY LAKE LICENSE PLATES We are gearing up for the big “push” for sale of license plates in May. Students of USD 417 Media Class, taught by Bruce Hula, have designed a slide which will be appearing on cable channel 2 television and on the channel 2 website. Those students will also be distributing flyers to business owners in the communities for them to display in their windows encouraging patrons to purchase a license plate. And the BIG NEWS, at the May 5 th meeting of the USD 417 Board of Education, Lake Association President Curt Brungardt will present a check of our first donation to Chairman of the Educational Enhancement Fund, Ralph Mock. We are extremely excited to be able to contribute to the school district in this manner. Keep the money coming!!! Thank you so much for your support. Together, we can! COUNCIL GROVE BUSINESS EXPO Once again the Lake Association sponsored a booth at the annual Council Grove Business Expo. Several Lake Association volunteers answered questions and distributed information about the Lake Association. The brochure the Lake Association provided to the USD 417 Educational Enhancement Fund and flyers about our City Lake License plate fund raiser were also distributed.
