CG Lake Association General Membership Meeting
Minutes
(printable view)

June 14, 2008, Community Christian Church

33 members in attendance

Joyce Hutter, Vice-President, called the meeting to order at 9:05 am in the absence of President Curt Brungardt. Joyce welcomed members and explained that the low attendance was a result of the Symphony in the Flint Hills taking place on the same day.

Minutes of the May 10, 2008 general meeting were approved as written and distributed.

The May 30, 2008 treasurer’s report was presented by Andy Hutter in lieu of LuAnn Fuller’s absence. The ending balance was $43,603.48. A motion was made to approve the Treasurer’s report. Motion was seconded and carried.

Review of Election Process:

Joyce reminded the membership that the Board of Directors election was in process and that ballots would be counted the following day, Sunday, June 15 at 1:30 at the Bowers Center. Mary Anne Clark (Chair), Karen Waring, and Jean Krause will serve on the election committee. Approximately 150 ballots have been received. An email list of the new Board of Directors will be sent to lake residents, an article will be submitted to the CG Republican, and the list will be placed on the association website. The first meeting of the new Board of Directors will take place on June 28, 2008.

Review of selling items at General Meetings:

Following the May general meeting, several people mentioned that they felt there was too much emphasis placed on the selling of items at the meetings. The Executive Board agreed that only those items directly affecting the Lake Association will be sold at future meetings.

T-shirts and license plates will also be available at these local businesses:

License Plates – ACE Hardware; Adams Lumber and Homestore;

Saturday Morning; Trudy’s Trowbridge Classics

T-shirts – Saturday Morning; Trudy’s Trowbridge Classics

Joyce reminded the membership to thank the merchants for supporting the Lake Association in this way. The businesses receive nothing for this service.

John Nicodemus reminded us that one of the best ways to sell things is through word-of-mouth. Talk to your neighbors about the items that are for sale through the Lake Association. Be sure they understand that every single dollar from the sale of the license plates goes to the local USD 417 Educational Enhancement Fund (thanks to the generosity of Leon Lungwitz, D37).

Wah-Shun-Gah Days Parade Entry:

LuAnn Fuller has volunteered to be in charge of our Lake Association entry in the parade. If you are interested in helping LuAnn with our entry, please call her. John Nicodemus can not be in town that weekend, but offered his boat for the parade and is willing to load it on the trailer and have it ready to be decorated.

4 th of July:

Christie Brungardt provided an update on the upcoming 4 th of July Boat Regatta and Lakefront Decorating contest. These festivities will take place on Saturday, July 5 th.

The Flint Hills Community Band has once again agreed to provide patriotic music as part of the regatta. Everyone at the lake is encouraged to get involved in some way. For more information, look on the Lake Association website. To enter your boat or lakefront in the decorating contest you may:

  • contact Christie at 620 767-8355
  • email her at cjbrunga@fhsu.edu
  • stop by I-21 Lake Road
  • register online at www.cgclakeassoc.org
  • stop at the Council Grove Marina

(To be judged, boats must have their registration number affixed to the side of their boat during the regatta.)

KU Biological Survey:

John Nicodemus gave an update on the biological survey of the lake. KU representatives will give a presentation over their findings at our next meeting. The General Membership Meeting will be held at 9:00 am, then the meeting will be opened up to the General Public for the KU presentation at approximately 10:00 am. The KU team will provide a survey map of the lake for any lake resident who is interested.

Last week Andy Hutter met these same KU researchers at the reservoir as they performed the same survey process there.

Review of what is being done to build community:

Joyce reported on several initiatives the Lake Association is working on in an effort to work more closely with the Council Grove community.

  • Educational Fund – The $1,000 donated from the sale of the City Lake license plates has generated a great deal of excitement in the community.
  • The Executive Board voted to donate $100 to the Council Grove Arts Council who is instrumental in providing cultural opportunities in the community.
  • The Lake Association donated two prizes (one t-shirt, one wind jacket) to the Wah-Shun-ga Days button drawing.
  • The Lake Association has been a member of the Chamber of Commerce for some time. Joyce Hutter and LuAnn Fuller attended the Train the Trainer program put on by the Director of the Scenic Byway Program. The purpose of this program is to help communities better promote their local points of interest by serving visitors to the community more effectively.
  • Recently the Chamber asked the Lake Association to help support the Chamber’s grant monies request from the City. Numerous lake residents attended the council meeting. The Chamber did receive the funding.
  • The Chamber also recently asked for organizations to host the Quarterly Breakfasts they promote as mixers for Chamber members, as well as other community members, to come together for food, fellowship, and fun. The Lake Association has agreed to host the August 21 breakfast. This will be held at the Community Christian Church. Cost is $5 and all lake residents are encouraged and welcome to attend. Generally between 40-60 people attend these events.

Other business:

Christie Brungardt once again reminded everyone of the importance of getting involved in the 4 th of July festivities. The best way to build a sense of community at the lake is through involvement of everyone in community initiatives.

Joyce thanked the officers and Executive Committee who have served the past year.

With no further business, the meeting adjourned at approximately 10:15 am.

Respectfully submitted,
Christie Brungardt
